Read it. Pick your university. Apply today.

What Are the GREAT Scholarships?

The GREAT Scholarships programme is one of the UK government’s most significant international education initiatives. It is delivered through the British Council in partnership with over 60 UK universities and the GREAT Britain Campaign — a global programme that promotes British education, culture, and values worldwide.

Each year, the programme provides financial support to outstanding international students from selected countries, helping them access world-class UK postgraduate education that might otherwise be financially out of reach.

For 2026–27, Nigerian students can access GREAT Scholarships at nine UK universities, with awards of £10,000, £12,000, or £15,000 applied directly as tuition fee reductions.

To be eligible across all GREAT Scholarships, Nigerian applicants must generally:

  • Be a Nigerian citizen and current resident of Nigeria
  • Hold or be working toward an offer of admission at the relevant UK university
  • Be enrolling in a full-time postgraduate taught master’s programme
  • Be a self-funded student not in receipt of a full scholarship from another source
  • Meet the English language requirements of their chosen programme

Each university also has its own specific requirements — covered in full for each institution below.

The Nine GREAT Scholarships for Nigerians 2026 — Full Breakdown

University of BATH1. University of Bath GREAT Scholarship 2026 — £15,000

The highest-value GREAT Scholarship available to any Nigerian student in 2026.

Every other GREAT Scholarship on this list offers £10,000 as the standard award. Bath offers Nigerian students £15,000 — £5,000 more than the programme minimum. That extra £5,000 represents roughly two months of living costs in the UK and makes a meaningful difference to any student managing a tight budget.

Why Bath

The University of Bath ranks in the top 10% of universities worldwide (QS 2026), sits on a UNESCO World Heritage campus, and is just a short journey from Bristol and London. It has an outstanding graduate employability record and deep industry links across engineering, management, science, and social sciences.

What Bath is looking for

Bath evaluates candidates on three criteria that go beyond grades:

Academic excellence — A strong, consistent undergraduate record. First-class or equivalent is the target profile.

Work experience or proven subject interest — This is a Bath-specific criterion not shared by most other GREAT Scholarships. If you have relevant professional experience — internships, graduate roles, research projects — highlight them clearly. If your formal experience is limited, demonstrate active subject engagement through self-directed learning, certifications, or community projects.

Career clarity — Vague goals do not work at Bath. Know exactly where you are going and explain how this specific programme gets you there.

Critical funding conflict — read this before applying

⚠️ If you receive the Bath GREAT Scholarship or the Bath Global Excellence Scholarship, you become ineligible for the Bath Merit Scholarship. These awards cannot be held simultaneously. Plan your scholarship applications carefully before submitting.

Eligible faculties: Engineering & Design, Humanities & Social Sciences, Science, School of Management. MBA programmes are excluded.

University of Warwick2. University of Warwick GREAT Scholarship 2026 — £15,000

Joint highest value. World top-100 university. Earlier deadline than most.

Warwick matches Bath as the only other GREAT Scholarship offering £15,000 to Nigerian students. It is one of the world’s top 100 universities and consistently produces graduates sought by employers across Africa, Europe, and beyond.

The detail most applicants miss

⚠️ Warwick is the only GREAT Scholarship on this list that requires you to have accepted your offer before applying — not just received it. Simply holding a conditional offer is not enough. You must have formally accepted your place at Warwick before submitting the scholarship application.

This is the single most important practical distinction on the Warwick application. Applicants who submit without accepting their offer will be disqualified.

What Warwick is looking for — four criteria

Warwick takes a holistic view. It evaluates candidates across four specific dimensions:

  1. Academic excellence — A strong undergraduate record reflecting the standard of a world top-100 institution
  2. Leadership and potential — Demonstrated initiative, ownership, and capacity to inspire others. No formal title needed — show how you have led in any context
  3. Commitment to impact — This is Warwick’s defining criterion. The university explicitly looks for candidates aiming to drive innovation, contribute to socio-economic development, and solve real-world problems. Connect your ambitions to a specific challenge, sector, or community. Vague goals fail here
  4. Global perspective — Awareness of global challenges and the ability to contribute to an international academic environment

Competing countries: Nigerian applicants compete in the same pool as France, Greece, Italy, Malaysia, and Turkey. This is a broader competition than most GREAT Scholarships.

Eligible programmes: Selected full-time taught master’s programmes — not all programmes at Warwick qualify. Confirm your specific course at warwick.ac.uk/scholarships or email scholars@warwick.ac.uk before applying.

University of Reading3. University of Reading GREAT Scholarship 2026 — £10,000

Pure merit selection. Combinable with other awards. 25 minutes from London.

Reading’s GREAT Scholarship is awarded entirely on academic achievement — making it one of the most straightforward to understand and one of the most demanding to win. Only two scholarships exist globally: one for Nigeria and one for India.

Quick Facts

Detail Information
Award Value £10,000 tuition fee reduction
Eligible Countries Nigeria and India
Number of Awards 2 (one per country)
Deadline 1 May 2026
Selection Criteria Academic achievement (primary)
Results Notification Within 4 weeks of deadline (late May/early June)
Application Portal me@reading (offer-holders only)
Official Recognition University of the Year for Scholarships & Bursaries 2026

The combinability advantage

Reading is one of the few GREAT Scholarships that explicitly permits combining the award with other partial University of Reading scholarships — as long as the total support does not exceed your annual tuition fees. If you are eligible for other Reading awards, you can stack partial funding. No other GREAT Scholarship on this list is as explicitly permissive about this.

Why Reading

Reading was named University of the Year for Scholarships and Bursaries 2026 by The Times and The Sunday Times — formal recognition of its institutional commitment to making education financially accessible. 98% of its research is internationally recognised. The main campus is 25 minutes from central London by train, giving students practical access to London’s job market and professional networks without London’s cost of living.

Application process note: The scholarship application is only accessible through the me@reading applicant portal, which becomes available once you hold a confirmed Reading offer. Apply for admission first — you cannot access the scholarship form without an offer.

University College London4. UCL GREAT Scholarship 2026 — £10,000

9th in the world. Two scholarships globally. The most selective award on this list.

University College London is ranked 9th in the world (QS 2026). It has produced 33 Nobel laureates. It sits in the heart of central London. And it is offering exactly one GREAT Scholarship for Nigeria.

This is the most prestigious and most competitive award on this entire list.

Quick Facts

Detail Information
Award Value £10,000 tuition fee reduction
Jointly Funded By UCL and British Council (unique — other awards are British Council only)
Eligible Countries Nigeria and Pakistan only
Number of Awards 2 (one per country)
Deadline 7 May 2026 at 5:00 PM BST
Selection Criteria Academic excellence AND financial need (both required)
Shortlisting Mid-June 2026
Final Results Early July 2026
UCL World Ranking 9th (QS World University Rankings 2026)

What makes UCL different from every other GREAT Scholarship

It is jointly funded. Every other GREAT Scholarship is funded by the British Council alone. UCL has made a direct institutional financial investment in this award — reflecting how seriously the university takes the programme.

It evaluates financial need. UCL is the only university on this list where financial need is a formal selection criterion, weighted equally alongside academic excellence. A brilliant academic record without demonstrated financial need will not be enough. Genuine financial need without strong academics will not be enough either. Both must be present.

Critical disclosure rule

⚠️ If awarded the UCL GREAT Scholarship, you must immediately inform the UCL Student Funding Office of any other funding you receive toward your UCL master’s degree — before or after the award is confirmed. Failure to disclose additional funding is a serious violation of scholarship terms.

Budget reality for UCL applicants: UCL master’s fees typically range from £20,000–£35,000+ annually. The £10,000 award is significant but partial. London’s cost of living is among the highest in the world. Budget planning is especially critical for UCL applicants compared to any other university on this list.

5. Royal Holloway GREAT Scholarship 2026 — £10,000

Part of the University of London. Two campuses. The 400-word rule that eliminates unprepared applicants.

Royal Holloway, University of London has over 170 years of academic history. It operates across two campuses — Egham, Surrey and central London — and sits in the top 25% of UK universities for world-leading research. Three scholarships are available globally: one for Nigeria, one for Ghana, one for Mexico.

Quick Facts

Detail Information
Award Value £10,000 tuition fee reduction
Eligible Countries Nigeria, Ghana, Mexico
Number of Awards 3 (one per country)
Deadline 11 May 2026 at 11:59 PM UK time
Graduate Employability 90%
Students from 165+ countries
Contact international@royalholloway.ac.uk

The 400-word rule — the detail that eliminates applications

⚠️ Royal Holloway requires a scholarship statement of exactly 400 words. Applications that exceed this word limit are automatically rejected. This is not a guideline. It is a hard technical cutoff. Count your words before submitting.

This rule disqualifies a significant number of applicants every cycle — not because their content is weak, but because they did not read the instructions carefully enough.

Deadline timing note: Royal Holloway’s deadline closes at 11:59 PM UK time — later in the day than most GREAT Scholarships, which typically close at 5:00 PM. This gives you more time on deadline day than other universities.

Dual campus advantage: The Egham campus offers a focused, award-winning academic environment in Surrey. The central London campus places students at the heart of London’s professional and cultural ecosystem. Both are accessible depending on your programme.

Edinburgh Naphier University6. Edinburgh Napier University GREAT Scholarship 2026 — £10,000

One award. Nigeria only. Your scholarship amount appears on your UK visa document.

Edinburgh Napier University offers exactly one GREAT Scholarship — and it is reserved exclusively for a Nigerian student. No other country competes for this award. That exclusivity makes it simultaneously the most Nigeria-targeted and the most intensely competitive award on this list.

Quick Facts

Detail Information
Award Value £10,000
Eligible Country Nigeria only
Number of Awards 1
Deadline 1 May 2026 at 5:00 PM UK time
Results Notification On or before 5 June 2026
Programme Duration

The CAS detail most guides miss

The £10,000 scholarship amount will be listed directly on your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) — the official document required for your UK student visa application. This is practically significant: having the scholarship confirmed on your CAS strengthens your visa financial evidence and simplifies the application process.

Graduate Route Visa pathway

After completing your degree at Edinburgh Napier, you may be eligible for the UK Graduate Route Visa — allowing you to remain in the UK for up to two years after graduation to work or look for work. For Nigerian graduates weighing the long-term value of different universities, this pathway is worth factoring into your decision.

About Edinburgh: Three campuses across one of Europe’s most beautiful, historic, and economically vibrant cities. Edinburgh consistently ranks among the best cities in Europe for quality of life and offers a thriving tech, finance, and creative industry ecosystem.

Edge Hill University7. Edge Hill University GREAT Scholarship 2026 — £10,000

Top 35 UK. Modern University of the Year. One deposit requirement almost nobody mentions.

Edge Hill is ranked Top 35 in the UK (Guardian University Guide) and was named Modern University of the Year by The Times and Sunday Times. Its 160-acre campus in Lancashire is close to both Liverpool and Manchester — two major UK cities with lower cost of living than London.

Quick Facts

Detail Information
Award Value £10,000
Eligible Countries Nigeria, Ghana, Turkey
Number of Awards 3 (one per country)
Deadline 30 April 2026 at 11:59 PM BST
Minimum Degree UK 2:1 equivalent or higher
Results Notification By 1 June 2026
Campus Ormskirk, Lancashire

The deposit requirement most applicants do not know about

⚠️ Successful Edge Hill scholarship recipients must pay a tuition deposit of up to £4,000 in line with Edge Hill’s International Tuition Fee Policy. This deposit is required even after winning the scholarship. Budget for it before applying — winning the scholarship does not mean your place is free to secure.

Degree requirement: Edge Hill explicitly requires a bachelor’s degree equivalent to a UK 2:1 classification or higher — one of the few universities on this list to state this minimum formally as part of scholarship eligibility.

Location advantage: Based close to Liverpool and Manchester rather than London, Edge Hill offers meaningful access to two major UK cities and professional networks without London’s rental costs. For Nigerian students on a careful budget, this is a practical consideration worth noting.

Cranfield University8. Cranfield University GREAT Scholarship 2026 — £10,000

The UK’s only exclusively postgraduate university. Their own airport. Six Queen’s Anniversary Prizes.

Cranfield University is unlike any other institution on this list. It has no undergraduate students. Every resource, every faculty member, every facility is dedicated entirely to master’s and PhD level study. This creates an academic environment that is more focused, more professionally oriented, and more research-intensive than any general university can offer.

Quick Facts

Detail Information
Award Value £10,000
Eligible Countries Nigeria, Kenya, Bangladesh
Number of Awards 3 (one per country)
Deadline 18 May 2026 at 5:00 PM GMT
University Type Exclusively postgraduate — no undergraduates
Queen’s Anniversary Prizes 6 times (highest on this list)
Notable Facility Fully operational airport for aviation research

The airport

Cranfield University has its own fully operational airport, used for aviation research, flight simulation, and aerospace training. For students targeting careers in aerospace, aviation management, engineering, or defence, this is a resource that no other UK university — and very few universities globally — can match.

The Information That Changes Your Strategy

Beyond the individual university details, here are the cross-cutting insights that should shape how you approach your applications.

You can apply to multiple GREAT Scholarships simultaneously.

There is nothing in the GREAT Scholarships programme rules preventing you from applying to every university on this list at the same time — provided you hold offers from each. Spread your applications. More offers means more scholarship opportunities.

If you win more than one, you choose one and decline the rest.

Most GREAT Scholarship terms require you to notify the university if you receive other funding. If awarded multiple scholarships, you select one and formally decline the others. This is expected and normal.

Only UCL evaluates financial need.

Every other university on this list selects on academic merit, leadership, or impact potential. If financial need is a significant factor in your situation, UCL is the only scholarship where demonstrating it directly strengthens your application.

Only Warwick requires an accepted offer — not just a received offer.

This distinction has eliminated applicants who did not read carefully. All other universities require you to hold an offer. Warwick requires you to have accepted it.

Only Reading explicitly allows combining with other partial awards.

If you are eligible for other Reading scholarships, stack them — within the tuition cap. No other university on this list is as explicit about permissive stacking.

Only Bath and Warwick offer £15,000.

Every other university offers £10,000 — except Brunel (£12,000) and Bath and Warwick (£15,000). If maximising award value is your priority, Bath and Warwick lead the field.

Which Scholarship Should You Prioritise?

Strongest academic record → University of Reading (pure merit selection, clear criteria)

Need to demonstrate financial need → UCL (only scholarship where this is formally evaluated)

Highest award value → Bath or Warwick (both £15,000; act immediately, both deadlines have passed)

Most prestigious name on your CV → UCL (9th in the world, 33 Nobel laureates)

Least competition from other countries → Edinburgh Napier (Nigeria-only award)

Want to combine with other partial funding → Reading (explicitly combinable)

Specialist engineering or aerospace career → Cranfield (only postgraduate university, unique facilities)

Specific digital or renewable energy programme → Brunel (check the six eligible courses first)

Lower cost of living than London → Edinburgh Napier or Edge Hill (Edinburgh and Lancashire respectively)
